Snowden's centennial celebration
Snowden reaches 100-year milestone
The 2010-2011 school year marks the 100 year anniversary of the opening of Snowden School. The school is celebrating all year with special events planned for the neighborhood and for Snowden alumni.
The festivities will begin on Saturday with school tours, available from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., following the Snowden Chorus performance at Clanjamfry at Evergreen Presbyterian Church, 613 University. Refreshments will be offered in the Elementary Library, just inside the main office entrance to the school. During the tours, the public is invited to look through a yearbook and get a preview of the documentary about the school by Memphis documentarian Willie Bearden.
Additionally, Snowden School will have tables at both Wolf River Day and Clanjamfry to provide more information about the school and other centennial events.
On Oct. 2, there will be a special Levitt Shell concert to celebrate the Snowden School Centennial, from 4-6 p.m. Performers include Snowden alumni, teachers and students.
Next, on Oct. 11, at 6 p.m, there will be another showing of Willie Bearden's documentary about Snowden School. The movie will be shown in the school's auditorium and tours will be available before and after the show, from 5-7 p.m. Doors to the auditorium open at 5:30.

SNOWDEN PTA TO HOST COMMUNITY@SNOWDEN
NEIGHBORHOOD, SCHOOL, AND FAMILY FUN DAY
SATURDAY, MAY 8TH, 11:00A.M.-3:00P.M.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Snowden PTA, along with community partners, will host CommUnity@Snowden on Saturday, May 8th from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. This annual event, which is free and open to the public, will feature a moon bounce, dunk tank, food, beverages, healthy exhibits, community informational booths, musical performances, fun activities for the whole family and much more!
According to Snowden Principal Randy Thompson, last year’s event drew about 800 people to the campus and accomplished its purpose of providing a fun, wholesome family day, as well as, showcasing Snowden School. “The theme of our event is ‘Where a neighborhood and a neighborhood school come together’ and that is what we saw last year. Not only did Snowden students and families enjoy the fun, but also neighborhood families, alumni, and faculty participated as well”, says Thompson. “This event provides a great opportunity for prospective and former students and their families, along with other interested community members to see and learn more about all of the wonderful things going on at Snowden.”
Healthy lifestyles and engaging the community are both themes emphasized at Snowden during the school year. According to Snowden PTA President Katy Leopard, “There will be an array of healthy activities for participants to enjoy from gymnastics to yoga combined with a lot of good natured fun like the moon bounce and competitions between the students, parents and teachers.” School Board Commissioner Jeff Warren will be on hand to participate in a bicycle relay race this year. The dunk tank offers students a unique opportunity to “dunk” their favorite administrators and show everyone that they are truly “all wet”!
Snowden alumni are encouraged to attend this outdoor event. Students will be on hand May 8th recording alumni memories to feature during Snowden's upcoming Centennial celebrations. There will be an alumni tent where yearbooks are available to browse and alumni can arrange to loan Snowden mementos.
